Why we do this

Most families start looking for a care home in a hurry: after a fall, a hospital stay, or a doctor saying it's no longer safe at home. We've seen how hard that week is, and how easy it is to be rushed into the wrong place by a stranger on the phone, or buried in calls after typing your number into a website.

So we built the service we'd want for our own parents. We look for what makes a home good: the caregiver who remembers how your dad takes his coffee, the kitchen that smells like dinner, the hallway that's calm at night. Honest about costs. Patient with hard decisions. Careful with your family's story.

More about us and how we're paid

Which kind of home fits?

Two very different choices. If you're not sure, that's exactly what we're here for. One short call can often settle it.

Board and care

When they need a helping hand

For someone who needs help each day: bathing, dressing, the bathroom, medications, or memory care. Most are real homes on quiet streets, with six or fewer residents and caregivers there day and night.

  • Licensed and inspected by the California Department of Social Services
  • Home-cooked meals, housekeeping and help with medications
  • Many welcome memory care, hospice and wheelchair users

What it costsCalifornia's median for assisted living was about $6,900 a month in 2025.1 Prices vary by city, room and care needs, and we'll be upfront about every one.

Room and board

When they just need a safe, friendly place to live

For someone who still takes care of themselves but shouldn't be alone, or can't afford a place of their own. A private or shared room in a family home, with meals and company included.

  • A furnished room, home-cooked meals and shared living spaces
  • We visit every home in person and check its business license
  • No personal care, so it's for people who don't need any

What it costsUsually far less than a care home. Many rooms rent for $900 to $1,800 a month, meals included.

Not sure which fits? Answer three questions.

Nothing is sent or saved. It just points you in the right direction.

1Do they need help bathing, dressing, using the bathroom or getting around?
2Do they need help taking medications, or reminders to take them?
3Do they have memory loss or dementia, or need someone watching over them?

Your answer will appear here.

1. CareScout 2025 Cost of Care Survey, California annual median for assisted living ($82,800 a year).

What working with us looks like

One advisor from your first call to move-in day. No call centers and no pressure.

  1. We listen

Tell us about your loved one online in about six minutes, or call and talk it through: their needs, the area, the budget and the timing.

  2. We do the searching

We quietly reach out to licensed homes that match. Only homes with a room ready that can truly meet their needs can say yes.

  3. You visit and compare

We book up to three visits around your schedule and come along when we can, with a simple guide of what to look for.

  4. You choose, we stay close

Pick the place that feels like home. We send the doctor's paperwork to that home and check in after the move.

Homes you'll visit

Your loved one's name and your phone number, so they can welcome you.

Questions families ask us

Don't see yours? Call (916) 555-0100. A real person will answer, and no question is too small.

Is senior placement really free for families? What's the catch?
There's no catch. Families never pay Golden State Senior Placement, not now and not later. When someone we've helped moves in, the home pays us a referral fee, the same way homes pay any placement agency. Every home pays us the same rate, so we have no reason to steer you anywhere except the home that's right.
How is board and care different from assisted living?
In California, board and care homes and assisted living communities hold the same kind of license: both are Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs). The difference is size and feel. "Board and care" usually means a house with six or fewer residents and home-cooked meals; "assisted living" usually means a larger building with more amenities. Both help with daily care and medications.
Who is room and board a good fit for?
Room and board fits someone who still takes care of themselves (bathing, dressing, the bathroom and their own medications) and doesn't have dementia, but shouldn't live alone or can't afford a place of their own. They get a furnished room, home-cooked meals and company. Room and board homes are not licensed to give care, so if needs change, we help the family move to a licensed care home.
Will we get to see the homes before deciding?
Always. Up to three homes that fit can say yes, and you visit each one in person or by video before deciding anything. We set the times around your schedule and one of our advisors comes along whenever we can. You get a tour page with addresses, times, each home's state license record and the questions worth asking.
Will my phone start ringing off the hook?
No. Some referral websites pass your number to dozens of places. We never do. Homes first see a summary with no names. Your loved one's name and your number go only to the few homes you agree to tour, and the doctor's paperwork goes only to the home you choose.
What if we change our minds?
That's completely fine. Call (916) 555-0100 or email hello@goldenstateseniorplacement.example with your reference number and we'll stop all contact and close your request within 10 days. No pressure, ever.

Run a care home or room and board home?

Fill your empty rooms with residents who are a good fit, in the counties you serve. Joining is free, and you pay only when someone we refer moves in.

Know a family who needs help?

Hospital discharge planners send referrals through a secure portal and follow every step. Realtors, financial planners, churches and senior centers can join too, and earn a thank-you reward when a family moves in.

Not sure where to start? Start with a conversation.

We'll listen, answer your questions and help you think through next steps, even if you're not ready to move yet. Every day, 8 am to 8 pm.

Prefer that we call you?

Leave your name and number. A real person will call, usually the same day.
